PART 3   EXECUTION

3.01     EXAMINATION

1.          Verify the suitability of existing conditions before starting work.  Do not begin work of this Section until unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected.

2.          Verify that substrates are free of dust, loose particles, oil, and other foreign material that could affect bonding.

3.          Secure grounds, screeds, corner beads, casing beads, plaster stops, and accessories.

3.02     PREPARATION

1.          Protect surrounding areas from potential damage.

2.          Saturate substrate with a hose letting water dripping top to bottom one day before finishing. Dampen substrate again before application.

3.          Protect adjacent surfaces and items that are not to receive plaster finish, but which cannot be removed, from finish work.  Use masking materials that will not damage protected items and surfaces.  Leave tape 1/16” from the edge of plaster surface for easy, clean removal.

4.          Clean concrete surface of foreign materials. Use pressure wash with hot water.

5.          Roughen smooth surfaces

3.03     INSTALLATION

  1. Control and Expansion Joints

1.          Installation of accessories: Section 09200 “Metal Laths & Trims”.

2.          Locate control and expansion joints every 12 feet.

3.          Scribe contraction joints every 12 feet in each direction by cutting through 2/3 of the plaster maximum depth, neatly, in straight lines.

4.          Install control and expansion joints with specified device.

5.          Coordinate joint placement with other related work.

  1. Scratch / Brown Coat

1.       Number of coats: Provide minimum two coats: cement plaster scratch coat (3/8”) and cement plaster brown coat (3/8”) application over metal lath.

2.       Interrupt any plaster only at junctions of plaster planes, at openings, or at expansion joints.

3.       Apply scratch coat with sufficient material and pressure to form full keys through and to embed metal base. When firm, score in a horizontal direction.

4.             Apply brown coat to scratch coat, flat to true surface, and free of imperfections.

5.             Compress brown coat at initial set to ensure adequate bonding with the scratch coat.

  1. Accessories & Base Plaster

1.              Prepare all materials in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations.

2.              Reinforce all corners at openings with ARROW 45. Place the reinforcing mesh around each corner and secure with a tight coat of base plaster UNILIME. Let cure for 24 hours.

3.              Provide each square nose corner with COMBO 90.  Place the bead over the corner and secure with a tight coat of base plaster UNILIME. Let cure for 24 hours.

4.              Unilime is applied to the face of the substrate. Manually or with a gun, apply an even coat of Unilime approximately (1/8”) in an area slightly larger than the 39” (1 m) width of the reinforcing mesh.

5.              Immediately install the GMESH into the base coat, embedding it with a trowel from the center and outward to its edges, cutting off any accumulated excess base coat. This method keeps the mesh laying flat, ensuring consistent embedment into the base coat. In the event that any portion of the embedded mesh pattern is still visible, skim coat to hide the pattern following the initial set. Let cure for 24 hours.

6.              Damp the substrate with water and let the moisture leave the surface before applying ANY finish.
